Homemade Baby Food
When we found out we were expecting a baby, we started talking about all the things that go with it. Names, nursery themes, furniture and breastfeeding or bottle feeding. Along with the choice of breast or bottle feeding we discussed baby food. It was a very short four months before she started eating food and it was important to have a plan . We decided to make our own baby food for several different reasons but the top 2 were the cost and the nutrition. A jar of baby food costs .50. If your baby eats 3 jars of baby food a day, thats $1.50 a day. Thats $10.50 a week. When making homemade baby food, it cost between $1.50 to $2 a week. I like that price better. Also, homemade baby food does not contain perservatives.
Its super simple and easy to do, it just takes a little bit of prep time.
What you need: Food of your choice, Ice cube trays, blender, clothes pins.
Today, we did Sweet potatoes.
*Sweet potatoes retain most of their nutritents when you bake them, but boiling is ok too. Its faster. NEVER microwave.
When they are done cooking, cut and put in the blender. (My husband bought me the Ninja just for making baby food. Its the #1 blender on the market)
One great thing about making your own baby food is you can control the texture of the food. Some baby's can have texture issues. Its also an easier transition to table food textures.
Put the pureed food in ice cube trays. *Each cube is one ounce.
I use clothes pins to label the trays while they are in the freezer. Some foods look the same such as carrots and sweet potatoes OR apples and pears. Put trays in the freezer.
When the food is frozen transfer to freezer bags for storage.
Take the cubes out to thaw in the morning or if you have a bottle warmer you can use that for quick thaw. NEVER microwave, it 'kills' the nutrition in the food.
Enjoy!

P.S. One large Sweet potato will fill a 16 cube ice tray.
